Equipping at-risk high-school students with resources needed for success
Communities in Schools of Seattle places site coordinators directly in schools to connect students with the support needed to be successful. The coordinators provide broad services to the entire school, working on school-wide issues such as low attendance or bullying. Coordinators also organize small group activities that focus on developing positive behaviors, building learning skills, and improving social-emotional skills. The coordinators will work one-on-one with kids who are struggling the most. Together they create plans to help the student achieve their goals. Communities in Schools of Seattle’s mission is to empower students to stay in school and achieve in life.
The Seattle Hyatt family has partnered with CIS of Seattle for years to ensure students have their basic needs met. They’ve acquired needed supplies across a number of drives – collecting school supplies so every student is ready to learn, hygiene and personal care products to support student’s dignity, and collecting food and presents for families during the holiday season.
This year, CIS of Seattle expects to serve approximately 4,000 students school-wide and 400 with intensive case management. The Hyatt Community Grant will directly support this work. Students who are case managed will receive services that include basic resources like food backpacks; participation in prevention and social/emotional support groups; daily attendance check-ins; and tutoring.
